The Mari Lwyd (Grey Mare) custom harks back to South Wales in the year 1800. The wassailing tradition features the use of a hobby horse made from a horse's skull mounted on a pole and carried by an individual hidden under a sackcloth. The Mari Lwyd would be carried to local houses, accompanied by a group of supporters who would then request entry through the medium of song. The householders would be expected to deny them entry, again through song, and the two sides would continue their responses to one another in this manner. If the householders eventually relented, then the team would be permitted entry and given food and drink.
This little 'grey mare' features ribbons in the traditional colours of both Wales and Christmas. I'm not sure anyone will offer you food or drink, but why not give them a song and see what happens! This piece is approx 7cm x 5.5cm, and combines gloss, marble, and mirror acrylics, with some hand painted detail. Sure to be a talking point whether it be Christmas or Halloween, you can now regale any inquisitive soul with the story of Mari Lwyd.
